Gesture of Repetition/繰り返しのジェスチャー

Returning to Japan from the United States and settling in Kanazawa, a city where traditional crafts and folk arts are close to daily life, I began to observe not only the materials I work with but also the process of creating various works using different craft materials. Through this lifestyle, I realized anew how much repetition exists in our lives.

Like a craftsman makes the same bowls repeatedly. In the pursuit of higher precision in making, we repeat, over and over, the same actions. Watching this process closely reminds me of our own lives. Most of our daily existence is made up of simple, repetitive routines—sometimes tedious, sometimes stimulating. When we step into a new environment, the initial days feel extraordinary, but eventually, they too transform into ordinary, everyday life.

From this cycle of simple repetition, we grow, we decline, and occasional extraordinary events come to shape our individuality. The project "Gesture of Repetition" explores the gestures of daily life and repetition through menial and labor-intensive processes: cutting each glass-blown ring individually and assembling them into panels. By engaging in this repetitive work, I aim to simplify the concept of repetition that exists abundantly in our daily lives.

アメリカから日本に帰国し、金沢という工芸が身近な都市に住む。自分の扱う素材だけではなくさまざまな工芸素材の作品制作を近くで見つめる。その生活の中に様々な「繰り返し」が存在することに改めて気が付いた。

作品の精度を上げるために繰り返し、繰り返し作り続けること。その姿から私は私たちの生活そのものを想起する。私たちの生活は、ほとんどが単純で繰り返しの多い日々で構成されており、退屈なこともある。刺激的なこともある。新しい環境に飛び込むと、最初の数日は非日常的だが、いつしか日常的な日々に変わる。

この単純な日々の繰り返しから私たちは成長し、衰え、いくつかの非日常的な出来事が私たちの個性を作り出す。「繰り返しのジェスチャー」は、吹きガラスで制作したガラスのリングに一つ一つ切れ目を入れ、木工細工の様にパネルとして組み上げる反復労働、そしてそのパネルを焼成した際に生じるランダムな歪みから日常の中に多々存在する反復の概念を視覚化することを目指している。
